Before his presidential appointment as Minister of Education, He served in a variety of positions. From 1993 to 1999, He was assistant professor at the National University of Rwanda and from 1997-1999, Lecturer at both Kigali Independent University and Kigali Lay Adventist University. During the same period he served in succession as Project coordinator at GTZ-Kigali and then as Senior Project Manager for Catholic Relief Services.
From 2000 to 2008 He served in the National Electoral Commission of Rwanda, Advancing from Deputy executive secretary to the commission’s top executive post where he served five years as Executive Secretary. From 2008 to 2011 he was a member of the East African Parliament.
Prime Minister Dr HABUMUREMYI Pierre Damien received a Bachelor of Science in Sociology and did a post graduate course in Education at Lubumbashi University in The Democratic Republic of Congo. He earned a Master of Science in Political Science at Panthéon-Assas University Paris II (France). He also holds a PhD in Political Science (Conflict Management) from Ouagadougou University in Burkina Faso. His Doctoral Research subject was entitled: “Political Power and Ethnicity in Rwanda: Analysis of the Rwandan Conflict and post 1994 political response for the rebuilding of a State Nation”.
He is the author of several publications including “The Political Integration in Rwanda after the 1994 Genocide: Utopia or Reality?”(Palloti Press, Kigali, 2008). He is a member of international professional organizations dealing with issues involving elections and education and has participated in more than 50 electoral observation missions in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
In 2012, Prime Minister Dr Pierre Damien HABUMUREMYI was awarded an Honorary Doctorate (Honoris Causa) in Law by California Baptist University (USA) for his achievements.
