Le prix Nobel de la paix a été attribué à Abiy Ahmed, Premier ministre éthiopien, qui a contribué à mettre fin à la guerre que son pays mène contre l'Erythrée depuis 20 ans.
En annonçant le prix à Oslo, le Comité Nobel norvégien a déclaré que "les efforts d'Abiy méritaient d'être reconnus et devaient être encouragés".
Le conflit entre l’Éthiopie et l’Érythrée sur le territoire frontalier litigieux a eu un coût financier et humanitaire énorme pour les deux pays.

Abiy, 43 ans, a également été récemment salué pour son rôle dans la conclusion d'un accord de partage du pouvoir au Soudan voisin après une crise politique qui a conduit à l'arrestation d'Omar al-Bashir, le dirigeant du pays pendant près de trois décennies.
Berit Reiss-Andersen, président du comité Nobel norvégien, a déclaré que M. Abiy - qui avait reçu à la fois des éloges et des critiques pour ses réformes en Éthiopie - n'avait pas été reconnu trop tôt, mais avait reconnu que des progrès devaient encore être accomplis dans le pays. .
"En tant que Premier ministre, Abiy Ahmed a cherché à promouvoir la réconciliation, la solidarité et la justice sociale", a-t-elle ajouté.
"Cependant, de nombreux problèmes restent non résolus. Les conflits ethniques continuent de s'intensifier et nous en avons eu des exemples troublants au cours des dernières semaines et des derniers mois."
Reiss-Andersen a poursuivi: "Certes, la réforme de l’Éthiopie à la démocratie a certes déjà été accomplie, mais le chemin à parcourir est encore long. Rome n’a pas été créée en un jour et la paix et le développement démocratique ne seront pas atteints dans peu de temps "
Le comité n'avait pas été en mesure de contacter Abiy avant de rendre son prix public, mais après l'annonce, le bureau du Premier ministre éthiopien a tweeté qu'il était "heureux d'exprimer notre fierté" dans sa sélection.
Élu en avril dernier, les premiers mois du mandat du premier ministre Abiyay ont été marqués par une prise de décision audacieuse et progressiste.

Il a libéré les prisonniers politiques du pays, dénonçant leurs actes de torture, et a libéré des journalistes emprisonnés. Abiy a rencontré l'opposition politique et la société civile pour discuter de réformes et a invité les partis politiques précédemment exilés à rentrer en Éthiopie. Il a également entrepris d'importantes réformes institutionnelles, notamment dans les secteurs de la sécurité et de la justice.

The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Abiy Ahmed, the Ethiopian Prime Minister who helped end his country's 20-year war with Eritrea.
Announcing the prize in Oslo, the Norwegian Nobel Committee said Abiy's "efforts deserve recognition and need encouragement."
The conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea over disputed border territory came at a huge financial and humanitarian cost for both countries.

Abiy, 43, also recently won plaudits for his role in helping to broker a power-sharing deal in neighboring Sudan after a political crisis that led to the arrest of Omar al-Bashir, the country's ruler for almost three decades.
Berit Reiss-Andersen, the chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, said Abiy -- who has received both praise and criticism for his reforms in Ethiopia -- has not been recognized too soon, but acknowledged that progress still needs to be made in the country.
"As Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed has sought to promote reconciliation, solidarity and social justice," she added.
"However, many challenges remain unresolved. Ethnic strife continues to escalate, and we have seen troubling examples of this in recent weeks and months."
Reiss-Andersen continued: "There is definitely a lot achieved already in reforming Ethiopia to a democracy but there's also a long way to go. Rome was not made in a day and neither will peace or democratic development be achieved in a short period of time."
The committee had not been able to contact Abiy before making his award public, but after the announcement the Ethiopian Prime Minister's office tweeted that it was "pleased to express our pride" in his selection.
Elected in April last year, the early months of Abiy's premiership were marked with bold and progressive decision making.

He released the country's political prisoners, denouncing their torture, and freed jailed journalists. Abiy met the political opposition and civil society to discuss reform, and invited previously exiled political parties to return to Ethiopia. He also embarked on major institutional reforms, including in the security and justice sectors.
"In Ethiopia, even if much work remains, Abiy Ahmed has initiated important reforms that give many citizens hope for a better life and a brighter future," said Reiss-Andersen.
